Following Jesus Into the Neighborhood: The Church Has Left the Building!

The Sunday the church left the building is nearly upon us! We are excited to already hear the stories and plans that emerging. One family is partnering with neighbors to host a brunch – and the hosts are not church goers! Another family is hosting a picnic at a local park and inviting their neighbors to join them. Others are gathering at the Pavilion at Pump Road for fellowship and working in the Community Garden at Common Ground.

What are you planning? We’d love to hear what you’ve got planned. More importantly, we’d like to hear how your day goes! Please share your stories with Nelson or I, or alternatively, you can post your story on the Pump Road Website (scroll down to reply) or post photos to our Facebook page!

If you feel uncertain about how you can participate I’ve put together this handy little guide our the Pump Road website to give you some ideas. The easiest is to simply walk around your neighborhood, taking notes on what you observe, and praying for those around you.

10 Ways YOU Can Participate in Following Jesus Into the Neighborhood:

Read your Bible! We’ve taken our model for Following Jesus into the Neighborhood from Luke 10, where Jesus sends out 72 disciples two by two.
Make a walk around your neighborhood, and ask these questions:

Without asking someone else, can I provide the first and last names of the people who live beside (or above and below) me?
What can I describe about their lives that can be known only by someone who has been inside their home?
What are some of the God-shaped longings and/or questions that currently shape their lives?

If you see someone, and are able to strike up a conversation, consider these questions to ask:

When did you first move into the neighborhood?
What brought you here?
What are your best memories of this neighborhood?
Tell me about your family. Does your extended family live here too?
What would you love to see happen in this community?

Find a Yard/Garage Sale. Strike up conversation with the people you meet there. Ask them about unique items they are selling – “where did it come from, why did you get it, why are you selling it?” A good list can be found on Craigslist
Visit a Real Estate Open House, and observe and engage with potential buyers – you might just meet future neighbors
Cook a meal or bake some cookies and deliver them to a neighbor (or five).
Setup a corn-hole game on your front lawn and invite others to join in the game.
Offer to mow your neighbor’s lawn, or perform some other yard work.
Have breakfast or lunch with a friend you haven’t seen in awhile.

This class is being hosted by Steve & Nichole Boyce who are passionate about equipping parents for the journey ahead. The Boyce’s themselves are parents who continue to focus on their family journey with three young adults.

As parents, we need to do everything we can to enhance our children’s relationship with us, to influence their relationships with those outside the home, and most importantly, to advance their relationship with God. Parental Guidance Required will help parents to ask themselves the important questions: Am I economizing my time with my child, or am I investing in my child by carefully developing the quality of our relationship over the long haul? Am I striving to control the influence that friends have in my child’s life? Am I nurturing a healthy, eternal perspective that will help my child to weather the inevitable storms of life?

More About Faith Milestones:
Paul writes about his faith journey in Philippians using the illustration of a race, pressing on toward the goal to know Christ, to be like Christ, and to be all Christ has in mind for him. We are all on a faith journey pressing on toward the goal. Third wants to join you on the journey as we encourage, empower, and help equip you for the race: the race toward the goal of maturing in Christ. We have developed a roadmap for how Third can assist our church family on this journey from birth through adulthood. This booklet shares Faith Milestones, which are geared toward children from birth through seniors in high school.

Through the framework of Faith Milestones, Third is intentional about equipping and celebrating with parents and our church family the spiritual markers in the lives of our children. Examples of Faith Milestones that help equip parents at developmentally appropriate times are through Family Prayer and Devotions or discussions about Integrity and Purity. We celebrate with children as a church family at times such as Baptism, Second Grade Bible Presentation, and Launching Out with Night to Remember as they graduate.

The point is that there is a plan and there is intentionality: Third working with parents and our church family toward the goal of passing on the faith to the next generation. Through the implementation of these milestones, the church and families have a framework within which to work together as we nurture the spiritual growth of our children.

Blessing Bags for the Homeless

Have you ever driven past a person in need and wondered what you could do to help? You don’t want to give money because you are afraiad they might spend it on bad addictions but you still would like to help them? Blessing bags are the perfect solution! Blessing bags are zip-lock bags filled with essentials for people in need. These bags are a great way to make an impact on these people’s lives.

How can you help?

We are accepting money donations to purchase items and we are also accepting items to fill the bags. The following are a list of items we would like to collect:

Chapstick
Small packages of tissues
Toothbrush and toothpaste (you can purchase these at the dollar store or possibly ask your dentist for a donation)
Comb
Soap Trail Mix
Granola Bars
Crackers
Gum/mints
Band-aids
Mouthwash
Hand wipes
Socks
Gloves
Crackers
Applesauce cups
Fruit cups
Water
Hand sanitizer
Sanitary products for women
Travel size products from hotels (do you know someone who travels frequently, they may be very happy to get rid of all of the little bottles)

What will we do with these bags?

The students will collect items for the next few Sundays then we will create as many bags as possible. The students will bring the full bags to church on March 4th to hand out to the congregation. We ask that the congregation keep them in their car and hand them out as you feel called. We are excited to hear the stories that everyone will have about their bags!

Don’t forget to ask family members and neighbors for donations. Many people can donate items already in their pantry and that makes giving easy!

Missional Fellowships Winter Launch – January 15

Join us on January 15 as we launch our Winter quarter for Missional Fellowship! We’ll be looking this Winter at a book in the Bible called Galatians, and think it will be a great entry point for anyone wanting to learn more about what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

Missional Fellowships are small group experiences of community, discipleship, and outreach. They are open to all. Find out more information on the different groups and meeting times here.

Student Gathering beginning January 21! (The Well every Sunday at 9:30 a.m.)

Our students (middle and high schoolers) are beginning an evening gathering January 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Apruzzese’s home (contact Dave) for directions). Come check it out sometime (they’ll be meeting every first and third Saturday nights). Hope too see you there!

Also, every Sunday 9:30 a.m., students are invited to The Well where you will learn and grow with other students like you. Hope to see you there also!

College Gathering

Hey Pump Road College Students!

Welcome home for Christmas! I’m sure many of you are glad to have another round of finals and papers behind you and are ready to mooch off mom & dad for the holidays! Real food here you come!

Two things:

First, I want to extend an invitation to all of you to our Christmas Eve service at Pump Road – 5 PM at Steward School. I have wonderful memories of attending Christmas Eve services with my family while I was home for college, and I hope we can create the same experience for you!

Second, it would be fun to get all the college students together while you’re home. Its short notice, but would something like lunch on the Monday after New Years work – January 2? If there’s another date/time that would work better for everyone, we can look into that! Let me know your preference.
