Blessing Bags for the Homeless

Have you ever driven past a person in need and wondered what you could do to help? You don’t want to give money because you are afraiad they might spend it on bad addictions but you still would like to help them? Blessing bags are the perfect solution! Blessing bags are zip-lock bags filled with essentials for people in need. These bags are a great way to make an impact on these people’s lives.

How can you help?

We are accepting money donations to purchase items and we are also accepting items to fill the bags. The following are a list of items we would like to collect:

Chapstick
Small packages of tissues
Toothbrush and toothpaste (you can purchase these at the dollar store or possibly ask your dentist for a donation)
Comb
Soap Trail Mix
Granola Bars
Crackers
Gum/mints
Band-aids
Mouthwash
Hand wipes
Socks
Gloves
Crackers
Applesauce cups
Fruit cups
Water
Hand sanitizer
Sanitary products for women
Travel size products from hotels (do you know someone who travels frequently, they may be very happy to get rid of all of the little bottles)

What will we do with these bags?

The students will collect items for the next few Sundays then we will create as many bags as possible. The students will bring the full bags to church on March 4th to hand out to the congregation. We ask that the congregation keep them in their car and hand them out as you feel called. We are excited to hear the stories that everyone will have about their bags!

Don’t forget to ask family members and neighbors for donations. Many people can donate items already in their pantry and that makes giving easy!

This is a preliminary guide as to how the property may one day be used and does not represent any actual construction or development plans. Any actual plan of development for the construction of buildings will be subject to future review and decision by Third’s elders and by Henrico County at the appropriate time. This site plan also gives the church the ability to make wise decisions about potential present uses of the land by making sure they won’t interfere with possible future building locations.

Missional Fellowships Winter Launch – January 15

Join us on January 15 as we launch our Winter quarter for Missional Fellowship! We’ll be looking this Winter at a book in the Bible called Galatians, and think it will be a great entry point for anyone wanting to learn more about what it means to be a follower of Jesus.

Missional Fellowships are small group experiences of community, discipleship, and outreach. They are open to all. Find out more information on the different groups and meeting times here.

Student Gathering beginning January 21! (The Well every Sunday at 9:30 a.m.)

Our students (middle and high schoolers) are beginning an evening gathering January 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Apruzzese’s home (contact Dave) for directions). Come check it out sometime (they’ll be meeting every first and third Saturday nights). Hope too see you there!

Also, every Sunday 9:30 a.m., students are invited to The Well where you will learn and grow with other students like you. Hope to see you there also!

Hey Pump Road College Students!

Welcome home for Christmas! I’m sure many of you are glad to have another round of finals and papers behind you and are ready to mooch off mom & dad for the holidays! Real food here you come!

Two things:

First, I want to extend an invitation to all of you to our Christmas Eve service at Pump Road – 5 PM at Steward School. I have wonderful memories of attending Christmas Eve services with my family while I was home for college, and I hope we can create the same experience for you!

Second, it would be fun to get all the college students together while you’re home. Its short notice, but would something like lunch on the Monday after New Years work – January 2? If there’s another date/time that would work better for everyone, we can look into that! Let me know your preference.

Stop Hunger – Pack Some Meals! 1/21/12

The World Hunger Crisis
More than 1 billion people do not have enough to eat. In developing countries, 10.9 million children under age five die each year. In fact, a child dies every six seconds from a hunger-related cause.

Be Part of the Solution
The reality is that the world hunger crisis is surmountable. There are enough sustainable food resources, processing potential and distribution know-how to feed everyone.

We at {pump road} are partnering with Stop Hunger Now to host a meal packing event on January 21, 2012.

Stop Hunger Now’s meal packaging program is recognized as a viable solution to combat hunger among the world’s most impoverished. Each high protein, dehydrated meal, comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring and 21 essential vitamins and minerals, provides a reasonable serving for six. The meals are easy to transport, store and distribute to those in greatest need.

A System of Volunteers
The meals are packaged by volunteers – like you. Through a fun and engaging assembly line process, a team of 40 volunteers can package 10,000 meals in just two hours.

Our goal is to have 400-500 volunteers at our {forest ave} site on January 21 to package 100,000 meals. The goal is ambitious, but you can help us succeed! Because each meal costs just 25¢ your contributions make a big difference.

At {pump road} we see this as an excellent opportunity to invite our friends, neighbors, and co-workers to join us as we serve the world’s poorest populations.

Christmas Eve at {pump road}

Worship will be at Steward School in the performing arts center.

We will not have worship on Christmas Day at {pump road}, instead we encourage you to join us at our Forest Avenue site at 11 AM.

Faith Giving

I have a deep desire to see people at our church grow in a fuller, richer life with God. I’m also convinced that our money and possessions are robbing us of spiritural prosperity.

One of the best ways to free our hearts more for God is to offload the pressure “rival gods” exert on our hearts. Giving helps offload the pressure of money. If you’ve never tasted the joy of having your heart freed up more for God through giving, you’re missing something!

My wife Lisa and I are being led to new levels of giving. I say “being led” because I’m convinced it’s a work of the Holy Spirit. We sense God gently directing our spending decisions in a new way. We sense a growing priority for additional giving. And far from finding our hearts fearful about not having enough, we find our hearts growing lighter, freer.

Let me invite you on the exciting journey of a richer, fuller relationship with God through giving. If you call Third at Pump Road your church home, let me urge you to make a faith giving commitment. A faith giving commitment is simply a financial pledge of your family’s intention for kingdom work through Third Church in 2012. A pledge enables our elders to plan for the year, and it is a good spiritual discipline which will grow your faith.

Some of you ask, “How much should I pledge?” First, pledge what you can give joyfully, “not reluctantly or under compulsion” (2 Corinthians 9:7). Some of you are very new to faith, or you’re just beginning to grow in this area. Second, be mindful that while the Bible first establishes a tithe as a benchmark for giving (a tithe means 10% of your gross income), in the New Testament, writers open the way for giving well beyond the tithe, in proporation to what God has entrusted to you. Third, if you’ve not yet made a decision to follow Jesus, please don’t give. Giving is a response of gratitude to God for the gift of his Son.

This is a matter between you and God, but remember, this is a matter between you and God! In other words, the stakes are high, spiritually, relationally, in your richness with God.
